WHAT MAKES A GOOD PLAYGROUND SURFACE?
A safe and suitable surface for children's play areas should primarily be desgned to absorb at least some of the impact of a child's fall. A new or established play area with any equipment or activities which might result in a fall should be based on an appropriate safety surface.
There are now a number of different surface options available, each one with its relative merits and drawbacks. In a garden or busy playground, if budget allows, a surface that withstands all conditions and minimise injury is a priority.
Bonded Rubber Mulch
Bonded rubber mulch is recycled black rubber shredded, coloured and then formed with a specially formulated PU binder. It can be laid onto solid ground using a membrane and does not require a sub-base or any edging, making it a superior low maintenance alternative to bark chippings and similar loose surfacing.
Bonded rubber mulch is tested to the requirements of BS EN1177:2008 and meets the industry standard to reduce risk of injury for children’s heads, legs, arms, shoulders and backs. It is available in various thicknesses depending on the free height of fall of the equipment installed. A perfect choice for play areas.
Wet Pour Rubber
Wet Pour is formed from continuous rubber and provides a top quality, resilient, slip-resistant surface requiring very little or no maintenance.
Aesthetically, it is availabe in a range of colours, shapes and can be designed to incorporate logos or any other signs or symbols to aid the activities intending to be played.
Loose Fill & Playgrade Bark
Loose fill surfacing generally consists of wood chips, shredded rubber, crumb rubber and sand.
Loose fill requires more maintenance than the alternative solidified surface options.
Artificial Grass
Artificial turf is designed to be a safe, durable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to rubber-formed surfaces or its natural cousin.
The major benefit of artificlial grass is the appearance of natural turf, all year round with little or no maintenance.
Rubber Tiles
Rubber play area tiles offer excellent protection and cushioning. They are formed from recycled rubber which is tremedously durable, resilientm water resistant and UV resistant.
