Softwood Decking
Traditional, lower-cost decking wood, pressure-treated for durability. Softwood decking is formed from evergreen, coniferous trees like pine and spruce.
It is though that around 80% of the world’s managed timber is softwood. When used outside, softwood boards as decking outside is pressure treated with preservatives to shield it from typical outdoor threats and natural deterioration.
Hardwood Decking
Hardwood decking is formed from a range of different broad-leaved trees such as ash, oak or beech. They are slower in their growth and as such, it is generally more durable.
Hardwood decking can be effectively sanded down and resealed and it is less likely to mark.
Composite Decking
Composite decking is a manmade product that is growing in popularity year upon year. It is manufactured from a combination of wood fibres and plastic, and designed to look as much like real wood as is possible.
That added expense brings with it some valuable benefits. Primarily, it requires almost zero maintenance - it never needs sanded, sealed or stained. Periodic cleaning is the limit of effort required. It is also particularly durable, stain-resistant and holds strong against extreme weather - retaining its original colour for many years.
PVC Decking
PVC decking is made completely from plastic, unlike composite decking which also contains wood fibres. PVC decking provides a similar range of benefits to composite decking, such as almost zero maintenance and strong durability.
One additional benefit of PVC decking is the range of colours in which it is available.
